Project Spotlight: Atlantic Contracting Delivers Advanced Insulation Solution at Long Island LNG Plant

Atlantic Contracting & Specialties has successfully completed a specialized insulation project at a Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) plant on Long Island, New York. This project showcased Atlantic Contracting's expertise in handling complex insulation requirements for critical energy infrastructure. It also exemplifies the critical role our trade plays in supporting essential energy infrastructure and highlights the specialized skills required to handle cryogenic applications. The project involved the installation of a high-performance, double-layer insulation system with a corresponding support structure, ensuring the safety and efficiency of the LNG facility's operations.

The Challenge:

LNG plants present unique challenges for insulation due to the extremely low temperatures required to maintain natural gas in a liquid state (around -260°F or -162°C). Effective insulation is crucial to:

> Minimize heat gain and maintain the cryogenic temperatures of LNG.
> Prevent dangerous gas leaks and potential fire hazards.

> Maximize energy efficiency by reducing LNG boil-off (vaporization).

> Protect the plant's infrastructure from thermal stress and damage caused by extreme temperature differentials.

The Solution: A Double Layer System with Enhanced Support

Atlantic Contracting implemented a sophisticated insulation solution featuring a double-layer FOAMGLAS® system.

Double Layer Insulation: The application of two layers of FOAMGLAS® insulation provided enhanced thermal protection and redundancy, crucial for the safe handling of LNG. The joints between the insulation layers were offset to prevent continuous vertical seams, ensuring system integrity. The outer layer incorporated a factory-applied PC® 700K system for added protection.

Specialized Support: In addition to the insulation layers, Atlantic Contracting installed a specialized support system. While not explicitly called a "bridge system" in the same way as in other applications, this system provided critical structural support and minimized thermal bridging, preventing heat transfer through support elements. This is similar in concept to the use of "bridges" and extender plates in the FOAMGLAS® Pool Fire Suppressant (PFS G2) system, where these components connect adjacent modules, limit movement, and ensure overall system stability.

Materials and Expertise:

Atlantic Contracting utilized FOAMGLAS® cellular glass insulation, known for its exceptional thermal performance and suitability for cryogenic applications. The installation required specialized adhesives (PC® 62, PC® 88, and PC® 99 2K) and mechanical fasteners (PC® F anchors) to ensure a robust and long-lasting insulation system.

Atlantic Contracting's team demonstrated their expertise in:

> Handling and installing FOAMGLAS® insulation in demanding cryogenic environments.

> Applying specialized adhesives and fastening systems.

> Ensuring precise installation and attention to detail to meet stringent safety and performance requirements.

Raising the Bar for Insulation Excellence

This Long Island LNG plant project exemplifies the expertise and dedication that ICA members bring to complex industrial projects. By delivering a double-layer insulation system with a focus on structural integrity and precision installation, Atlantic Contracting has not only met the project's demanding requirements but has also raised the bar for insulation excellence in our region. This project underscores the vital role of skilled insulation contractors in ensuring the safety, efficiency, and longevity of critical energy infrastructure.
