Tell the Department of Labor you support the construction industry’s exclusion from IRAPs

The Department of Labor has introduced draft language for regulations on expanding apprenticeships, including expanding Industry Recognized Apprenticeship Programs (IRAPs). IRAPs are a direct threat to our Registered Insulators Union Apprenticeship program and to the entire construction industry. Currently, the regulation has an exclusion for the construction industry, but during a 60-day comment period, we must tell the Department of Labor construction apprenticeships needs to remain excluded. Non Union Contractor Pleads Guilty to Manslaughter, Pays Full Restitution to Workers

SSC High Rise Inc. has pled guilty to manslaughter in the second degree for causing the death of construction worker Juan Chonillo, paid $842,000 in restitution for wage theft and was assessed a $10,000 corporate fine - the maximum penalty under New York Law.

BTEA Accompanies Governor Cuomo to Puerto Rico

BTEA Members were part of teams going to Toa Baja, La Playita and Catano for site visits. The effort is being conducted with local and New York State nonprofits, BCTC Labor and SUNY/NYU volunteers. CUNY is scheduled to send 500 student volunteers in June to assist in the effort.

Paid Family Leave Law July 1 Deductions

Please be aware of the requirements for the NY Paid Family Law, which goes into effect January 1, 2018. The leave is paid for with deductions from employees’ wages, which are remitted to either your private short term disability insurance carrier, or to the state insurance fund.  Although the law does not take effect until January 1, 2018, employees should begin to accumulate enough money in the insurance fund to be able to take paid family leave (PFL) as soon as they are eligible.  The regulations, therefore, permit employers to begin making deductions on July 1, 2017.
